to say that she was adjusting would be an understatement because forks was nothing compared to what she was originally used to.      a small country town was not as easy to settle into as she thought it would be, but it was the best option at the time.    a small place meant familiar faces, close knit connections and less drama.   after what she had been through,  a big city would have probably driven her mad especially with her paranoia.   it wasn’t all bad,   she had managed to make friends with the chief of police who apparently had a sweet spot for her.   it wasn’t so much that he found her attractive, because she doubted that was the case,    but he apparently felt as though dani reminded him of his daughter that she had never seen him with.    it was suspicious at first , but when people around town started to mention to her that bella was indeed real, dani’s skepticism began to fade.

he had finally explained to her that his daughter was with her mother, her mother who had divorced him quite some time ago.     visits during the summer was usually when he saw her,   but now that her mother was remarrying and touring the globe with her new lover,   bella needed to have stability some where so she would be staying with him for a time.    she could empathize, but she still felt as though he was in some kind of mourning.    perhaps he wasn’t doing so well with the fact that she had spent so much time away from him.    Either way, she was apparently around now which is why dani took a step back from quality time with him.    it wasn’t her intention to be cruel,    but she did understand that he valued time with her and dani didn’t want to get in the way.    she also didn’t want a reason to have to explain her story to the girl.     no one in town knew where dani came from or the troubles she escaped and the last thing she wanted was for them to find out. she was a mystery and she was ok with that. no one in the town really asked many questions of her ,    but when they did she plaid naturally dumb. it was usually short answers or answers that weren’t too descriptive.   Charlie knew more than anyone because he handled her file,   but there were things that he didn’t even know or realize.    she had guessed that because of his knowledge he had taken a strong liking to her.    he wanted to protect her and she let him.

naturally, she had been ignoring his calls, avoiding his home and all in all she’s been engulfing herself in her work and school. it was actually much easier than she thought it’d be.    a social life was easy, but when her social battery ran out she was usually found in the herbal department of her school.     plants were a big thing in forks and she was grateful.

she shouldn’t have been surprised when she heard an unfamiliar voice calling her name and as a reflex she tightened her apron.       ❛  Dani … it’s just Dani  …... ❜   she corrected sheepishly.    she hadn’t heard anyone call her by her full name since her home town.     she never liked the way it sounded because it never truly felt like her that the name belonged to.    she pushed a piece of hair behind her ear before smiling at the girl.   ❛  it’s nice to meet you, bella …    charlie….. told you about me ❜   she questioned loosely even though it was more so her paranoia that fueled her curiosity.

her relationship with her dad has always been achingly casual – she’s called him  ‘ charlie ‘  for years,   now,   and not in any way as to diminish the strength of their relationship,    but rather in cause of charlie always being like a parental roommate.    with most of her time growing up spent with her mom and just a handful of summer’s being in forks,   charlie took things lightly with her.   and ingrained in her own self,    bella has had a strong sense of responsibility since she was young.   she was functional,   and even now,  moving in with charlie was much like expanding her own capacity for adulthood.   it was more independent,   here.  quieterpeaceful.   while she mourned certain things,   like the sunny days and shopping centers,   forks was closer to meeting her personal level of comfort anyways.

❛  – dani !    got it,   sorry, ❜    she replies,   attempting to show her reassurance with a gentle smile.     ❛ and yeah ..   he didn’t bring up too much other than that you worked here,   and you’re pretty nice to him. ❜    weight shifts on her feet,    as she looks to the girl;   she could see some bare resemblance;   young,   pretty,   in a new place  with  wide eyes.    bella wonders if dani is observational,  too –   carries similar habits,   perhaps,   of protectiveness over one’s self.       ❛  i’m just waiting for him to finish up work,   we might sit down here for a bit.    but hey – uh,   if you want,  you can take my number?    you’re more relatively new around here than i am,  i think.   but if you ever need anything,   it’s always good to have someone there for you;    maybe someone around your age,   that doesn’t work for the police.  ❜    she smirks a bit.
